Children at Bright Horizons Elvetham Heath Day Nursery and Preschool in Fleet, Hampshire have been celebrating Chinese New Year and learning more about the tradition.

The children played with pretend noodles and used chopsticks to pick them up, which helped to develop their fine motor skills. They also learned Chinese New Year songs, took part in a dragon dancing session and looked at Chinese writing whilst creating their own on their whiteboards.

In a further activity, one part of the Growing Scientists enhancement, the children placed Mentos inside a bottle of Coca-Cola and watched the explosion. They pretended these were fireworks being let off to celebrate Chinese New Year.

“The children were very excited to learn more about Chinese New Year and showed a keenness to learn more about the traditions that go with it,” said Nursery Manager Toni Kirby.

Bright Horizons’ Growing Scientists enhancement aims to help children identify scientific activities that occur in their everyday lives.
