Children at Bright Horizons Little Gems Nursery and Preschool in Irthlingborough have been reaping the rewards as part of their efforts in the organisation’s Green Gardeners programme.
The children have been picking the produce of their work in recent weeks, after growing a range of vegetables in the nursery garden.
“The children have thoroughly enjoyed the Green Gardeners and learning about different vegetables and how they grow,” said Nursery Manager Sharon Hales. “They were very satisfied the see their rewards after growing and looking after the vegetables as they do so.”
The Green Gardeners programme aims to encourage the children’s curiosity and interest in nature in order to understand the natural world that surrounds them.
The eldest of the children are also able to develop the appropriate language for naming plants and seeds, while the youngest are taught to understand and differentiate between the textures of natural materials.
Green Gardeners is a year-round programme that is enacted both inside and outside the nurseries in order to enhance knowledge on the impact and benefits of natural care.
