Meet the Team

Bright Horizons Long Road Day Nursery and Preschool Manager

Shannon Ainge

I began my career at Bright Horizons Long Road Day Nursery and Pre-school in September 2014 as a newly qualified Nursery Nurse in the toddler room as my first role in the childcare industry.

This role allowed me to develop my understand and knowledge of children and young people, focusing on how they learn and develop and what we can do as childcare practitioners to provide an enabling environment and stretch and challenge the children within our care to reach their full potential while ensuring everyone is safe and care needs are met.

I was then able to use my learnt knowledge and skills to become Deputy Room Leader working alongside the team Room Leader to support the environment and team further. While being a Deputy Room Leader I was provided with the opportunity to undergo ‘The Room Leader Development Programme’, which supported be to be an aspiring Room Leader. Later in my time with Long Road, I was promoted to Room Leader of the toddler room.

In order to progress myself and develop experience and knowledge of a variety of age ranges I was then supported to transition in the Baby room where I became Baby Room Leader working to ensure an effective team was in place and the early nurturing care needs were in place for the babies.

In January 2019, I was offered the fantastic opportunity to become Deputy Manager where I have been able to develop and extend my knowledge and understand of the operations of Bright Horizons and to support all of my team to have the opportunities and develop as I have been given. I am now able to share my experience and knowledge to help others to succeed.

I have been in childcare for 27 years starting as a child minder and then transitioned to a nursery in Hinxton, where I started as a nursery nurse and the next few years completed my diploma in preschool practise before taking on the role of room leader of which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Crocus Nursery at Hinxton then became part of the Bright Horizons family where I was promoted to Third in Charge, which involved supporting with the operational business helping me to extend my knowledge on how the company operated.

In 2019, I was seconded to Long Road for 6 months to help in their preschool room as a room leader. When this 6-month support period ended, I decided after much consideration and persuasion from the Long Road team that I would like to stay at Long Road. My decision was made so much easier based on them being so welcoming and making me feel part of their team. I have made some very good friends and partnerships with my work colleagues throughout my time here at Long Road.

We are all a very dedicated team here at Long Road and pride ourselves in the work and the care we are able to provide. We are able to support children to develop to their full potential and develop to the best they can be.

We do numerous team activities such as the awards of excellence where we are able to support each other’s achievements, team meetings and at Christmas, we are able to engage in light entertainment where I introduced the team into the world of quizzes, bingo and games nights to work together and win prizes.

Candy Floss

Candy Floss

Hi, my name is Candy Floss, I joined Bright Horizons in March 2010 as the ‘Super Safety Hero’ to help nursery children stay safe and manage risks. My role as a Health and Safety Super Hero is unique to Bright Horizons and I’m in every nursery, 365 days a year.

Back in 2010, I saw a job advert for a Zebra Super Safety Hero – I was very excited, applied and was invited for an interview with several other zebras. We were interviewed by all the children who then voted on which of us would be their Super Safety Hero. It was hoof biting but I was thrilled when they told me I was the most voted for by the children who all loved me because of my cape and bag. My bag is very special, if something fits inside, it’s a choking hazard. You might be wondering how I got my name. The children in our nurseries chose five names and voted for their favourite. I love it as it’s unique, I mean have you ever heard of a zebra called Candy Floss? Exactly!

Why Bright Horizons

The Bright Horizons passion and enthusiasm for providing high-quality care isn’t just common knowledge within our own business – we’ve also gained some impressive accolades from external sources for excellence as both a childcare provider, and as an employer. We are the only childcare company to have been listed for the last 11 years as one of the country’s top 50 “Great Places to Work” by the Great Place to Work Institute.
