Preschool comes with plenty of questions, and just as many myths. We’re here to gently clear up common worries, explain what really supports young children, and help you feel reassured about how your child is learning, growing, and getting ready for school.
Truth: Play is actually how young children learn best. Through play, they practise language, build social skills, develop early maths and problem‑solving abilities, and learn to think creatively. It may look simple, but our carefully designed play activities lay the foundations for all future learning.
Truth: Many parents wonder whether the preschool their child attends will influence which primary school they go to. School places are allocated based on criteria set by the local authority or the school, such as proximity, siblings already enrolled there, religious criteria for faith schools, or entrance exams for selective schools. When choosing a preschool, the most important factor isn’t the postcode or the building - it’s finding consistent, high - quality care where your child feels happy, confident, and supported as they develop the skills they’ll carry with them to the next stage of their learning journey.
And when it’s time to apply for school, Bright Horizons is right there with you. Our teams have strong relationships with many local primary schools and can guide you through the process, offer practical advice, and help ensure your child transitions smoothly.
Truth: Children aren’t expected to read or write before school. Learning the alphabet or counting to 10, 50, or 100 is a rote memorisation skill. Preschool focuses on the skills that make reading and writing possible later - like listening, concentration, phonological awareness, fine‑motor strength, and understanding quantity (i.e., that “three” means “three objects”). These are the building blocks for future learning.
Truth: Young children learn best in environments that give them the freedom to make choices, helping them build independence and decision‑making skills. When they can select their own learning materials for part of the day, they’re naturally motivated and more deeply engaged. And with a skilled teacher guiding and supporting their exploration, children learn through meaningful interactions with both people and materials, developing confidence as they try new things.
