Ofsted praises Sheffield nursery for helping children thrive and become confident learners

Bright Horizons Millhouses Day Nursery and Preschool in Sheffield has been praised by Ofsted for its approach to helping children become confident, independent learners, after receiving a ‘Strong Standard’ across all areas assessed.

Inspectors found that “children thrive in this wonderfully nurturing and welcoming setting”, with strong relationships between children and staff helping them feel safe, secure and confident from the moment they arrive. Staff take time to understand each child’s individual needs, interests and routines, helping children settle quickly and develop a strong sense of belonging.

The nursery’s technique to building children’s confidence and independence, stemming from Bright Horizons Nurture Approach, was highlighted throughout the report. Children are encouraged to recognise their own needs, make choices and manage everyday routines, from babies developing the coordination to feed themselves to older children taking responsibility for hygiene and tidying up after meals.

Inspectors also praised the way children develop their communication skills through play, with children confidently sharing ideas, negotiating roles and working collaboratively with friends.

The report found that “children are highly curious, motivated learners”, with staff using children’s interests to extend their understanding and introduce new vocabulary.

Millhouses Nursery was also recognised for its inclusive approach and strong partnerships with families. The team works closely with parents and guardians to understand children’s needs and share their progress while identifying individual help for children who may need additional support.
