Ofsted highlights how Didcot nursery brings learning to life through play

Bright Horizons Didcot Day Nursery and Preschool has been recognised by Ofsted for creating a welcoming environment where children build confidence, develop independence and enjoy learning through hands-on play.

The nursery received ‘Expected Standard’ across all areas assessed. Inspectors found that “children arrive happy, settle quickly and enjoy attending this welcoming nursery”. Children form warm secure relationships with staff, and their support helps every child feel included.

The nursery offers a range of experiences to help children develop new skills and explore their interests. Babies and toddlers enjoy joining in with rhymes, copying actions alongside staff, while older children work together to make mud pies in the garden, sharing ideas and developing their communication skills through imaginative play.

Children are also encouraged to develop their physical skills and resilience at their own pace. Inspectors observed children practicing climbing and balancing, with staff offering gentle encouragement and support to help less confident children have a go.

The nursery places a strong emphasis on inclusion, ensuring children with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) can make progress and take part in activities alongside their peers. Inspectors found that children with SEND make “secure progress from their starting points”, developing greater confidence and independence as staff work closely with families and other professionals to understand individual needs and provide appropriate support.

Children’s learning is supported by a broad curriculum that includes stories, mark-making, early maths and imaginative activities. Inspectors noted that babies eagerly choose books and gesture for staff to read with them, while older children explore shapes and develop their understanding of numbers through everyday play.

Ellis, Nursery Manager at Bright Horizons Didcot Day Nursery and Preschool, said:

“We want every child at Didcot to feel safe, happy and confident, knowing they have people around them who understand them and encourage them to try new things. We’re incredibly proud of the Nurture Approach embedded across the nursery, it’s at the heart of everything we do to help children build confidence, develop resilience and flourish.”
