Bright Horizons Church Crookham Nursery and Preschool is celebrating its continued commitment to sustainability after retaining its Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, recognising the nursery’s efforts to make caring for the environment part of everyday life.
Eco-Schools is a global environmental education programme that supports schools and nurseries to incorporate sustainability into learning and empower children to take practical action for the planet. The Green Flag is awarded to settings that demonstrate a meaningful commitment to environmental education and positive change.
Church Crookham Nursery has proudly held its Green Flag since 2024, with children, families and staff working together to reduce waste, care for local wildlife and make a positive difference in their community.
From composting food scraps and reducing plastics to taking part in weekly litter picks, children are encouraged to learn about sustainability through hands-on experiences. The nursery’s own compost bin is used for food waste, while surplus food prepared by the nursery chef is offered to families at collection time. Families are also encouraged to donate unwanted food and toiletries to the local food bank, with donations collected and delivered to the centre each month.
The children regularly take their learning into the local community through weekly litter picks, helping them develop a sense of pride and responsibility for their surroundings. The nursery also works with local farms and community organisations, welcoming visitors who share their knowledge of farming, sustainability and animal welfare.
Chloe, Nursery Manager at Bright Horizons Church Crookham Day Nursery and Preschool, said:
“We’re incredibly proud to retain our Eco-Schools Green Flag and to see sustainability become such a natural part of nursery life. Our children are not just learning about looking after the planet, they are actively taking part in it.
“We also want to help children develop a genuine appreciation for the natural world. Our annual beekeeper visit is always a highlight, giving children the chance to learn about the important role bees play in our environment and even make their own beeswax candle. Throughout the year, they also make bird feeders, explore local wildlife and create artwork using natural materials. It’s wonderful to see how enthusiastic they are about these activities and how they are beginning to understand the difference their actions can make.”
Church Crookham’s environmental efforts were also recognised in this year’s Eco-Schools Impact Report for the positive steps being taken to inspire young children to care for the planet.
The nursery will continue to build on its environmental initiatives as part of Bright Horizons’ wider Future Earth programme, which brings together the company’s commitment to creating a more sustainable future through action across areas including waste, biodiversity and environmental education.
