Royal flowers help Edinburgh community garden bloom

A community garden created through a long-standing partnership between Bright Horizons Elsie Inglis Early Learning and Childcare and Elsie Inglis Nursing Home is flourishing thanks to a special donation of flowers originally grown for His Majesty The King’s visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. 

Developed as part of the nursery’s intergenerational programme, the community garden has become a shared space where children and care home residents can come together to learn and connect. Designed as a space for everyone to enjoy, the garden provides opportunities to grow flowers and vegetables, explore nature or simply sit together and chat while taking in the views of Arthur’s Seat. 

A particularly special addition to the garden came this month when flowers that had been specially grown for His Majesty The King's visit to the Palace of Holyroodhouse were donated to the project. Children and residents worked side-by-side to plant the flowers, creating another meaningful shared experience within the programme. Affectionately known as the “royal flowers”, the plants now serve as a lasting symbol of the partnership, community spirit and the positive impact of bringing generations together. 

The intergenerational partnership, which has developed over the past four years, has seen the nursery and care home come together to celebrate several special occasions, including the King’s Birthday, nursery graduations, fundraising events and summer fêtes, creating cherished memories and strengthening relationships across the community. 

Karen, Nursery Manager, Bright Horizons Elsie Inglis Early Learning and Childcare, commented:

The benefits for the children continue to be far-reaching, supporting the development of their confidence, communication skills, empathy and sense of belonging.  

“Through meaningful connections with older generations, our children are gaining valuable life experiences, learning respect and understanding, and developing a deeper appreciation of the community around them."
