Children at Bright Horizons Cramond Early Learning and Childcare are stepping beyond the nursery gates to explore Edinburgh’s natural surroundings, with regular beach and woodland visits helping to bring learning to life.
Taking advantage of the warmer weather in recent weeks, the nursery’s outdoor adventures form part of its ongoing initiative to encourage outdoor learning and exploration, giving children the chance to discover nature beyond the nursery environment.
The visits allow children to explore at their own pace, nurturing curiosity and building hands‑on experiences. Activities range from collecting shells along the shoreline and observing wildlife to gathering leaves, pinecones and other natural materials in the woodland.
Practitioners use children's observations, questions and discoveries from each visit to shape future learning experiences, supporting communication skills, emotional wellbeing and creativity while encouraging children to learn through real-life experiences.
By embedding regular outdoor exploration into nursery life, Bright Horizons Cramond aims to offer young children rich learning experiences rooted in relationships and real environments, rather than digital distractions.
Yvonne, Nursery Manager at Bright Horizons Cramond, said:
"Spending time outdoors gives children the freedom to explore, ask questions and discover the world around them. Whether they're collecting shells on the beach, spotting wildlife or gathering leaves and pinecones in the woods, every experience sparks conversations and ideas that we continue to explore back at nursery. Those shared experiences help children build confidence, strengthen relationships and develop a real sense of belonging, which sits at the heart of our Nurture Approach."
