24 St Swithin Nursery Wins Another Eco-School Award

Press release for eco school award for 24th St Swithin

Bright Horizons 24 St Swithin Day Nursery and Pre-School is proud to announce that it has once again achieved the internationally recognised Eco-Schools Green Flag Award for its exceptional environmental efforts and commitment to sustainability.

Located at 24 St Swithin Street, Aberdeen, AB10 6XD, the nursery’s recent success comes after months of inspiring work led by children and colleagues on a range of eco-initiatives, from growing vegetables and sunflowers to introducing wet bags to reduce single use plastics.

The Eco-Schools Green Flag Award, run by Keep Scotland Beautiful, celebrates schools and nurseries that make sustainability a key part of everyday life. The award recognises the nursery’s ongoing dedication to embedding environmental awareness into play and learning, while encouraging family and community involvement.

The nursery’s projects have included planting and harvesting wheat and vegetables, learning about life cycles, and taking part in national initiatives such as One Planet Picnic and It’s Your Neighbourhood. The children also explored emotional wellbeing through resources like The Colour Monster and Breathe Like a Bear, combining eco learning with mindfulness and care for their wider world.

Nursery Manager Helen said:

“The children have worked so hard for this, and we are so proud of them. From learning about recycling to local ecosystems, it has been great to see them become so engaged with the environment.”

Assessors praised the nursery’s clear journey from awareness to action and highlighted how practical initiatives such as reusing waste materials and encouraging outdoor learning have positively impacted both children and colleagues.

The team’s efforts reflect Bright Horizons’ Nurture Approach, which focuses on supporting the whole child through care, curiosity, and connection with the world around them. Through meaningful experiences like growing, exploring, and learning outdoors, children are encouraged to develop respect for nature and confidence in their ability to make a difference.

The award remains valid until October 2027. During this period, the nursery will carry out an environmental audit and work towards new sustainability goals, building on its strong foundation in environmental practices.
