Nursery In Berkshire Helps Wildlife as Part of An Eco-Schools Programme

The colleagues and children at Bright Horizons Bracknell Day Nursery and Preschool in Berkshire, have been taking part in various activities to help the environment as part of the Eco-Schools Programme, a wider project led by the team at Eco-Schools.

The Eco-Schools Programme is designed with seven steps that nurseries and schools follow to help empower young people to make changes to protect the environment and understand the impact of climate change. Bright Horizons currently has 59 nurseries across England and Scotland that have joined the programme.

An eco committee was set up at Bracknell Day Nursery and Preschool by Nursery Manager, Louise and Deputy Nursery Manager, Leanne, where they are joined by six children from the preschool to help discuss how they can make a positive difference to the environment and the changes they plan to make.

Some of the activities the children have been involved in are creating a bug hotel in their designated nature area, they made bird feeders using cereal to thread onto pipe cleaners, placing a hedgehog home down in their nature area, and using parmesan shakers to spread wildflower seeds.

The nursery is also part of the Keep Britain Tidy initiative where they took the young children on a walk to do litter picking. With the help of the children borrowing the litter pickers and collecting litter in their own time and in their local areas, they were able to collect nine bags in total to the cause and had them collected by the local council.

Leanne, Deputy Nursery Manager at Bracknell Day Nursery and Preschool said: “We really value being environmentally friendly and want to encourage the children at our setting to understand the importance of looking after our planet.

“The children are thoroughly enjoying taking part in the Eco-Schools Programme, they look forward to our weekly sessions we have in our eco committee. The feedback from parents has been amazing as the children have been excited to go home and discuss the topics they’ve learnt.”

Providing children with the best start in life is at the core of everything the team at Bright Horizons do. For more details on our passion for sustainability within our nurseries please visit here.
