How to Make Our Tomato & Red Pepper Soup with Orzo

  1. Heat the sunflower oil in a large saucepan over a medium heat.

  2. Add the chopped onion and cook for 5–6 minutes, stirring, until soft.

  3. Add the diced carrots and red peppers and cook for a further 5 minutes.

  4. Stir in the chopped tomatoes, red lentils, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper.

  5. Pour in the water and bring to a gentle simmer.

  6. Cook for 15–20 minutes, until the vegetables and lentils are soft.

  7. Remove from the heat and blend using a hand blender until smooth.

  8. Return the soup to the heat and stir in the orzo.

  9. Simmer for 5–10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is cooked.

  10. Adjust the thickness with extra water if needed and serve warm.

How to Get Your Child Involved

Babies

Babies can be involved by:

  • Smelling the soup once cooked and cooled slightly
  • Listening to the sounds of stirring and simmering
  • Exploring safe whole vegetables, such as a carrot or pepper, with close supervision
Toddlers

With close adult support, they can:

  • Help tip pre‑measured lentils or orzo into the pan
  • Stir the soup before blending (with an adult guiding the spoon)
  • Watch how the soup changes when it is blended
  • Count cupfuls of water as they are poured in
Preschoolers

As confidence grows, they can:

  • Help prepare vegetables using child‑safe knives
  • Measure & count cups of water or orzo
  • Help decide whether the soup should be very smooth or slightly textured
  • Serve soup into bowls using a ladle
  • Help tidy up by wiping surfaces or sorting peelings
  • Talk about the ingredients (for example, “Tomatoes and peppers make the soup red”)
