How to Make Our Chef's Choice Burrito Bowl

  1. Cook the rice according to packet instructions. Drain well and keep warm.
  2. Prepare the vegetables: Peel and finely dice the carrots. Dice the courgette and red pepper into small, even pieces.

  3. Cook the beef: Heat the sunflower oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add the beef mince and cook for 5–7 minutes, breaking it up with a spoon until fully browned.

  4. Add flavour: Stir in the tomato purée, garlic purée, paprika, and black pepper. Cook for 2–3 minutes until evenly mixed.

  5. Add vegetables and sweetcorn: Add the carrots, courgette, red pepper, and sweetcorn. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring regularly, until vegetables are tender but still holding their shape.

  6. Serve: Spoon rice into bowls and top with the beef and vegetable mixture. Serve layered or gently mixed, depending on preference.

How to Get Your Child Involved

Babies

Babies can be involved by:

  • Sitting nearby while rice boils and vegetables are prepared, listening to the sounds of cooking
  • Smelling warm rice or sweetcorn once cooled slightly
  • Exploring safe whole vegetables through touch with close supervision (for example, a carrot or pepper)
Toddlers

With close adult support, they can:

  • Choose which vegetable goes into the pan first
  • Scoop sweetcorn or diced vegetables from one bowl to another
  • Help rinse rice in a sieve before cooking
  • Name colours they can see in the vegetables
  • Count spoonfuls as ingredients are added, linking cooking with early number skills
Preschoolers

As confidence grows, they can:

  • Help organise ingredients on the worktop before cooking begins
  • Stir vegetables or rice while an adult holds the pan steady
  • Help decide how to build their bowl - rice first or topping first
  • Serve food into bowls using a large spoon
  • Take responsibility for clearing the table or sorting food waste after the meal
  • Talk about food groups (for example, “Rice gives us energy and vegetables help our bodies grow”)
