Mothering Sunday – Ideas on a budget

Mothering Sunday falls on the fourth Sunday in Lent, exactly three weeks before Easter Day. Once observed as a day on which people would visit their "mother" church, it has become an occasion for honouring the mothers of children and giving them presents. (Courtesy of the BBC)

However, Mothering Sunday in the current circumstances may be a very different one to usual. There are some lovely ideas for spoiling mums at home, which are still thoughtful and remind her of how loved and appreciated she is! Children of all ages can help (well, possibly apart from young babies…)

  1. The old favourite of breakfast in bed. Children can help with this even if they are too young to ‘cook’ - what mother wouldn’t love some burnt toast delivered to her in bed by her proud child and a beaming smile?
  2. Promise cards – these can be anything from chores that will be done around the house, to pledges of best behaviour for a day. Let the children come up with their own ideas of the promises they can treat their mothers with.
  3. Mother's Day IdeasA homemade card – created with enthusiasm and love. These often make lovely keepsakes to look back over in years to come.
  4. Give her the treat of a lie in. Even if she is still wide-awake at 6:00am from habit, not having to get up to feed children breakfast and get them dressed is a still a luxury that parents enjoy.
  5. Run her a bath, filled with lots of lovely bubbles and give her strict instructions to stay in there for as long as she likes.

We hope these give you some ideas on how to make the mum in your life feel like a queen for at least some of the day! And of course, don’t just leave it to one day in the year to show her how much you care, maybe some of these treats could become a regular thing for her to enjoy.
