Cambridge children create and build their own boats

Arts and crafts activities are a regular occurrence at Bright Horizons Wolfson Court Day Nursery and Preschool in Cambridge and the children used one recently to create and build their own boats.

Cambridge children create and build their own boats

The children were playing in the water tray with different size containers and developing their mathematical language describing whether the container was full, half empty or empty. A child then added some Lego to the water tray and said it was floating.

The children then collected some items to see if they floated or sank and this led them to talk about how boats float on water.

Nursery Manager Michela said: “The children looked at different types of boats and used recyclable materials to create their own. They talked about the different parts of the boats and looked at what they could use to create theirs. It was great to watch their creative thinking skills in action.”

Arts and crafts are a particular aspect of the Bright Beginnings curriculum which allows children to think creatively with loose parts and enhance their fine motor skills development.
