Children at Bright Horizons Lewisham Day Nursery and Preschool have been actively using phonics to sounds out words, which enhances their pronunciation skills.
Phonics is essential for children to become successful readers and writers in the early years of schooling and beyond.
“We start by introducing play pots with resources that all start with the same letter,” said nursery manager Sally Osborn. “Children learn to recognise how sounds are represented alphabetically and identify some letter sounds, symbols, characters and signs.”
Meanwhile, staff have been encouraging and assisting the children in climbing with the activity playing a key role in the development of children’s fine motor skills in the early years.
“Climbing at a young age helps hone spatial and directional awareness,” said Sally Osborn. “It also boosts physical skills such as balance, both hand and foot coordination, as well as agility. Not to mention it’s fun.”
