Ditta Kankulya is Nursery Manager at Bright Horizons Canada Square. After joining Canada Square in May 2017, we caught up with Ditta to find out more about her time so far at Canada Square and life on Canary Wharf.
Ditta, tell us a little about you.
I have worked in childcare since 2003 and began my career as a Nursery Assistant. I have a Level 4 qualification in Childcare and a Level 5 Diploma in Management. I am very proud to have progressed to the role of Nursery Manager and to have joined Canada Square Day Nursery and Preschool earlier this year.
Tell us a little about your nursery environment
Bright Horizons Canada Square is located close to the Jubilee line and within the Canary Wharf shopping mall. We have five home rooms at Canada Square, each tailored to children of different ages – from 3 months to 5 years.
What activities take place at Canada Square Day Nursery and Preschool?
We’re pleased to offer many activities and extra-curricular activities at Canada Square, including our Creative Cook cookery activities, Growing Gardeners for those with little green fingers, Active Athletes, Growing Artists and singing. In addition, we also have a sensory room for children under two to help develop their awareness and understanding of the world around them and an indoor garden for our older children. The children absolutely love the indoor garden!
Being located on Canary Wharf means that we have lots of outdoor space available to us too and we regularly go to Jubilee park, the roof top garden and take a stroll by the river.
We know your partnerships with your nursery families is very important to you. What activities and events for families take place?
Our families play a leading role in nursery life and we invite parents to visit the nursery regularly. We have an open door policy so parents are welcome to pop in at any time – as a number of families work on Canary Wharf we are delighted to see so many during their lunch breaks.
We also have a comfortable parent area and there are coffee making facilities, which is often really appreciated during busy morning drop-offs. I also host regular ‘Coffee Mornings with Ditta’ and our next event is taking place in September. The coffee mornings provide parents with an opportunity to meet with me and to ask questions or discuss aspects of nursery life or their child’s development.
Are there transport links to and from the nursery?
We’re located very close to the Jubilee line so many families use the tube to travel to and from the nursery, which is fantastic and very easy to navigate.
What has been your favourite memory so far at Canada Square?
My favourite memory so far has been receiving a ‘Green’ Award for our Keeping Everyone Safe audit. It’s was a wonderful achievement for the nursery team and credit to their hard work and commitment to keeping themselves, their colleagues and our children and families safe.
What is your favourite nursery meal?
Our vegetarian pasta is definitely my favourite meal!
