Self-Isolation Changes

Change in Government Guidance

As you may be aware, the Governments in all four nations have agreed to shorten the period of self-isolation from 14 days to 10 days. The new guidance is already in place in Wales. It will take effect from 00:01am on Monday 14th December 2020 in England and Scotland with the changes noted below:

  • Someone who, from 14 December, has been contacted through Test and Trace/Test and Protect/Test, Trace, Protect – including by the relevant NHS app – or their Local Health Protection Team/Health Board and have been notified to self-isolate, should do so for 10 days.
  • Someone who, from 14 December, is required to quarantine following arrival into England/Scotland/Wales from overseas countries which are not on the travel corridor list, should self-isolate for a period of 10 days instead of 14 days.
  • Someone who was previously instructed to self-isolate will, from 14 December, be able to stop self-isolating ten days from when they were first notified to do so. This means that the change to the isolation period will apply to all those who are currently self-isolating including those who commenced self-isolation before Monday 14th December.
  • Close contacts include members of the same household who test positive for COVID-19 – from 14 December will now only need to isolate for 10 days rather than 14.

Positive Cases

There has been no change to the self-isolation for those who have tested positive with COVID-19. This remains as 10 days.

NHS Test and Trace App (England)

The Government have advised that due to the time taken to test technical changes and release updates through the app store, the NHS COVID-19 app will not tell close contacts to isolate for 10 days instead of 14 days until Thursday 17 December and onwards.

In England, if you receive a notification from the NHS COVID-19 app before 17 December to isolate because you have been in contact with someone who has tested positive:

  • if you have also been contacted by NHS Test and Trace you must follow isolation guidance provided by contact tracers
  • if you have been advised to isolate by the app (and not by NHS Test and Trace) then you can leave isolation when your isolation countdown timer says 3 days
