Preschool children at Bright Horizons Highbury Day Nursery in London have been indulging in the world of poetry after taking part in a creative competition.
As part of the company’s Growing Writers and Growing Readers programmes, the children participated in a ‘My First Poem’ contest.
The children were given a poetry template, which they were able to personalise and create rhymes using information about themselves, their family and friends.
Eleven of the poems have since been published by children’s writing practice app Little Writer.
“The children showed vast creativity in the activity which gave them the opportunity to learn more about poetry and creative writing,” said Irmina Paseveckience, nursery manager. “We are pleased to continuously offer the children a platform to be expressive in written form.”
The Growing Writers programme aims to support a child on their journey in becoming a creative writer, while the Growing Readers programme is specifically designed to help the child become an independent reader.
