Super Hero helps keep children super-safe!

Children at Bright Horizons nurseries across the country have embraced their new friend, Candy Floss the safety zebra. Since the initiative was launched earlier in the year Candy Floss has been busy in the nurseries helping children learn about safety and risk – and having fun doing so!

Candy Floss came about as a development of a discussion between staff and children about how we could spread the message in all our nurseries about how to keep safe and healthy. The children created Candy Floss - a superhero zebra on a mission to keep all children safe!

From keeping play areas tidy, to crossing the road, to fire drills - Candy Floss is now our official Heath and Safety mascot – he is present in all nurseries and helps children understand how they can stay safe and help each other safe too.

What has Candy Floss been up to recently?

  • Children and staff were looking forward to a trip to the park. With Candy Floss’ help the children planned a safe journey, marking on a map all the traffic light points on their route and discussing how they would stop when they saw a red man on the lights and wait for the green man to appear.
  • Children and staff took Candy Floss into the nursery garden and talked about different kinds of plants, including those you should not touch in case they scratch or sting. To help everyone remember they put special Candy Floss stickers against each “risk” they identified.

Candy Floss features in a Nursery Inspection Report!

It’s not just the children, families and staff who love Candy Floss. Our hero has recently featured in an Ofsted Inspection Report. The inspector notes:

"The nursery also uses highly effective methods to encourage children to learn how to keep themselves and others safe. For example, they have introduced a toy zebra, that the children named 'Candy Floss', as part of Health and Safety goal training... Staff use Candy Floss to remind children of basic safety rules, such as sitting properly on their chairs, otherwise they could fall and hurt themselves. However, Candy Floss is used most effectively to help children check the garden themselves to ensure it is safe to use."
